What is AD&D Insurance?
Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance provides additional financial protection for you and your family in the event of a covered accidental death or injury. It is recommended for people who want to supplement their life insurance policy with efficient but inexpensive accident coverage. People with high-risk professions, such as construction, and those who are involved in extreme sports such as sky-diving and bungee jumping may be especially interested in AD&D insurance.
What Does AD&D Insurance Cover?
AD&D insurance will pay out in the event of an accident that results directly either in death or the loss/ dismemberment of a body part. Each policy differs in terms of what exactly is covered, but typically, the insurer will pay an “accidental death” benefit if the insured dies as the direct result of an accident. “Dismemberment benefits” are paid if the insured loses a limb or eyesight as the direct result of an accident. AD&D coverage typically pays half of the full benefit if the insured loses one body part, such as a hand, foot, limb or sight in one eye. The entire benefit amount generally is paid out if two body parts are lost. Depending on the policy, loss of other key functions may also be covered, including speech and hearing, triplegia (paralysis of 3 extremities), paraplegia, hemiplegia, the loss of a thumb and index finger of the same hand, and/or uniplegia (complete and irreversible paralysis of one limb). There are limits to AD&D insurance coverage. For example, most AD&D policies will not pay a benefit if the insured dies during surgery or war; has a mental or physical illness, bacterial infection or hernia;
or if he/she died as a result of a drug overdose or suicide.
